GRE Mean Scores

General Test Mean Scores

Historically the mean score has ranged between 455-475 for the GRE Verbal section and 570-590 for the Quantitative element. Interestingly, although the 3 parts of the test are meant to assess different aptitude abilities it has also been noted historically that there exists a significant correlation between these scores (the correlation between Verbal and Quantitative part scores is 0.32, for Verbal and AWA it is 0.63 and unsurprisingly only 0.17 between the Quantitative and AWA sections). Furthermore, the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) score is used by universities to evaluate the applicant’s true writing potential and utilized in appraising the Statement of Purpose (SOP) and other Application essays.
